Who needs overseas registration? Any practitioner who obtained their primary medical or dental qualification from an institution outside Sri Lanka must apply for recognition of their overseas qualification through SLMC before they can apply for full registration.

Registration Pathways

SLMC offers three distinct pathways for overseas-qualified practitioners seeking registration in Sri Lanka.

Straightforward

Recognised Qualification Pathway

If your overseas institution and qualification appear on the SLMC list of recognised institutions, you may proceed directly to registration after verification.

  • Degree from SLMC-recognised overseas institution
  • Document verification with awarding institution
  • Provisional registration for internship
  • Completion of Sri Lanka internship requirement
  • Application for permanent registration
Unrecognised Degrees

Assessment & Examination Pathway

If your overseas qualification is not on the recognised list, SLMC will conduct a formal assessment. You may be required to sit an SLMC equivalency examination.

  • Application for credential assessment
  • Submission of all academic documents
  • Review by SLMC Education Committee
  • Equivalency examination (if required)
  • Decision on recognition and registration pathway
Partner Countries

Reciprocal Agreement Pathway

Sri Lanka has reciprocal recognition arrangements with certain countries. Practitioners from these countries benefit from an expedited registration process.

  • Valid registration in a reciprocal partner country
  • Certificate of Good Standing from home regulator
  • Proof of reciprocal agreement eligibility
  • Reduced documentation requirements
  • Expedited SLMC review process

How the Assessment Works

The overseas credential assessment follows a structured five-step process.

Submit Application

Complete and submit the overseas credential assessment application via the MySLMC portal with all required documents.

Document Verification

SLMC verifies submitted credentials directly with the awarding institution and relevant regulatory authorities.

Committee Review

The SLMC Education Committee reviews the credential dossier and determines the appropriate registration pathway.

Exam (if required)

Applicants whose qualifications require equivalency testing will be invited to sit the SLMC equivalency examination.

Decision & Registration

A formal decision is communicated. Approved applicants proceed to provisional registration and the internship pathway.

All documents submitted for overseas credential assessment must be originals or certified true copies. Translations must be certified by a sworn translator.
