Required Qualifications

The Sri Lanka Medical Council registers apprentice pharmacists for a two-year training indenture under a supervising community pharmacist. Before applying, make sure you meet the requirements set out in the SLMC Instructions for the Registration of Apprentice Pharmacists (updated 01.12.2025).

Applicant Eligibility

No application will be accepted unless the applicant:

  • Is a Sri Lankan citizen.
  • Is of good character.
  • Has passed the G.C.E. (O/L) examination, or an equivalent examination, including a pass in English.
  • Has passed the G.C.E. (A/L) examination, or an equivalent examination, in one sitting, in three subjects — with Chemistry and at least two of: Biology, Botany, Physics, Zoology, Agriculture, or another biological science subject in the Biology Stream acceptable to the Council.

Important Instructions

Review these instructions carefully before you create your e-Services account and submit the online application.

Choosing the right supervising pharmacist matters most — applications linked to a pharmacist who does not meet the Council's criteria will not be accepted.

Supervising Pharmacist

Must be registered with the SLMC as a pharmacist and hold an active registration.

Must be serving as a community pharmacist in a community pharmacy. Pharmacists working in the internal pharmacies of government institutions are not accepted.

Each supervising pharmacist may train a maximum of six apprentice pharmacists per calendar year (1 January – 31 December).

Application Format

Only applications submitted in the "New Revised Updated Format — 2025.12.01" will be accepted. Old formats are not acceptable.

The Indenture Form must be printed on a separate sheet — altered indentures will not be accepted.

Name & Certificate Matching

The name on your G.C.E. (O/L) and (A/L) certificates must match your National Identity Card.

If there is a discrepancy, you must correct it through the Department of Examinations.

If your name has changed due to marriage, bring the original Marriage Certificate and Birth Certificate.

EPF / ETF & Equivalency

Providing your EPF and ETF numbers in the application is optional.

If you completed equivalent examinations in place of the G.C.E. (O/L) or (A/L), you must provide an official equivalency letter from the Department of Examinations.
